Kids who are watching more than 2 hours TV a day have a bigger belly. That is what scientists from the VUmc, AMC and GGD in Amsterdam found out when they researched around 2000 kids.
Prolonged sitting is called the new smoking for adults. With children there was no evidence between sitting and their health. That's why Scientists from the VUmc, AMC and GGD in Amsterdam researched the connection between sitting too long in front of a computer of TV and the health of children between 5 and 6 years.
The researchers found out with an ABCD study ( 2000 kids ) that kids who are watching tv for longer that 2 hours have a bigger belly than kids who don't.
This is the first time in history that this is proven with children between 5 and 6 years. "If we look at adults it is a well known fact that there is a connection between obese and sitting too long in front of a TV, but with younger children we didn't knew that until now." According to Medicine teacher Mai Chin A Paw from VUmc.
"We can now show that sitting too long also is a problem for young children; the recommendation almost have to be: avoid your children from watching too much TV."
Abdominal girth is related to the size of belly fat, which is related to diabetes and hearth deceases. "These kids are still young and we will continue following them to see if they are developing more deceases." Says Chin A Paw.
